The Chinese Lady
July 22 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm $25
The Chinese Lady is based on the true story of the first documented Chinese woman in America, Afong Moy, as she is toured around the United States as a living museum piece. On display for nearly half a century during the 1800’s, Afong clings to the hope that her presence might spark empathy and understanding between cultures. As she slowly comes to terms with her lack of autonomy, Afong turns critical of America’s imperialism, hypocrisy, and shallow understanding of a world outside its own. This wryly comedic, grimly honest story finally gives this widely forgotten historical figure a voice, leaving audiences to reexamine the current state of cultural dynamics in the modern world.
Presented in collaboration with Oklahoma City’s Asian District Cultural Association & Plenty Mercantile on July 20, 21, & 22 at the Venue at PLENTY, 807 N. Broadway in OKC.
